Overview
Historically, Zanzibar was the trading hub of East Africa, drawing merchants and explorers from diverse cultures including Sumerians, Assyrians, Phoenicians, Arabs, Chinese, and Malays. Famous explorers such as Burton, Speke, Livingstone, and Krapf commenced their journeys from these shores. A visit to the historic Stone Town, with its narrow winding streets, bustling markets, and vibrant bazaars, provides a rich cultural experience. Often referred to as the “Spice Island,” Zanzibar is famous for its production of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cardamom, pepper, and other spices.
