The Kilimanjaro Lemosho route is the most scenic trail on Kilimanjaro, offering panoramic vistas. As one of the newer routes, Lemosho provides an ideal balance of low crowds, beautiful scenery, and a high summit success rate, making it our preferred choice. Most of our clients climb via the Lemosho route and provide excellent feedback. We highly recommend it.The climb starts at Londorossi Gate (2,360 meters), approaching from the west. The route circles Kilimanjaro to the south, passing through a rainforest with unique wildlife, and continues to the third summit at Shira Ridge.
You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town; you will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. The missing gear can be rented on this day.
You will be picked up at your hotel at around 08:00am and transferred to the Lemosho gate located on the western side of Kilimanjaro. After the registration process you will still start our climb steadily through the forests of the Lemosho glades to reach Big Tree camp where you will be spending the night.
You will cover a lot of ground as you trek across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather, scattered with volcanic rock formations. Trekking through Shira 1 Camp, you can often see Kibo Peak floating on the clouds as we head towards Shira 2. The route to Shira 1 involves a reasonable altitude gain and some steep sections.
As you proceed to Shira 2, you'll have the opportunity to view the Northern Ice Fields from the western side of the mountain, along with unique views of Kibo. Our steady climb across the Shira Plateau moorland aids in acclimatization while providing great panoramic views.
Walking on high moorland, the landscape changes dramatically, altering the character of the trek. We traverse the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing beneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach, finally reaching camp. Though the day is spent at altitudes up to 4,600 meters, we follow the mountaineering principle of "walk high, sleep low" to help your body acclimatize to the altitude.
After a good night’s rest and breakfast, we set off for Barafu Camp at 4,640 meters. The climb takes us across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation, making for a tough, steep walk complicated by the altitude. Upon arrival, we eat and spend the afternoon resting, preparing for the long night and day ahead. Staying hydrated and warm is crucial. We have an early dinner and try to sleep, as we will be getting up between 11 PM and midnight to start the summit climb.
We start around midnight, climbing steeply upwards to the summit glaciers. The ascent involves 4 to 5 hours of scree climbing, gaining incredible height over a short distance. The views are spectacular. We reach Stella Point (5,739 meters) at sunrise, surrounded by spectacular ice cliffs and breathtaking views of jagged Mawenzi Peak and beyond. After another hour's walk, we reach the summit, Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters).
Our descent begins by returning to Stella Point, then descending the scree slope back to Barafu Camp for breakfast. We continue down to Millennium Camp for a long, well-earned rest.
A gentle trek takes us down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where we complete park formalities and receive certificates, which you can hang up with pride! We are then met by our vehicles and return to the hotel in Moshi, where you can treat yourself to a hot welcome shower.
The day is left free to wind down after the trek before your flight home. Depending on flight times you could go and explore Moshi town and grab some souvenirs before heading to the airport.
