Zanzibar, located in the Indian Ocean 36 km off mainland Tanzania, is an archipelago that includes Unguja, Pemba, and about 50 smaller islands. It is a semi-autonomous region within Tanzania with its own government.
Historically a major trading center, Zanzibar attracted diverse cultures, including Sumerians, Arabs, Chinese, and Malays. Famous explorers like Burton, Speke, Livingstone, and Krapf began their journeys from here. The archipelago boasts stunning sandy beaches, coral reefs, clear blue waters, and excellent opportunities for snorkeling, diving, fishing, and water sports. Stone Town, with its narrow streets, vibrant markets, and colorful bazaars, offers rich cultural experiences. Known as the “Spice Island,” Zanzibar is famous for its production of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and cardamom.
